Eloy Torres
Eloy Torres (1954-) is best known to most people for his monumental mural "Pope of Broadway", a portrait of Anthony Quinn on the side of the Victoria Clothing Company in downtown Los Angeles.
Torrez was part of a community of Chicano artists that clustered in downtown Los Angeles around 3rd Street and Broadway in the 1970's and 80's. He worked as an artist in residence in the early days of Self Help Graphics.
Torrez is a master of portraiture. For more than four decades, he has combined realism, surrealism, and synthetism to produce allegories of human psychology and experience. His powerful fusion of realist representation and phantasmagorical allusion creates a timeless style that inspires introspection and exploration. His unique style and body of work distinguishes Torrez as one of the great painters to emerge from the Chicano Movement.
